Before investing a dollar, ASIC requires knowing your investor profile.

Australia has top-tier infrastructure: Vanguard Australia, BetaShares, iShares, low-MER ETFs (VAS, VGS, VDHG), brokers like CommSec, Pearler, Stake, Selfwealth. Plus SMSF for higher net worth.

The 4 profiles

1. Conservative — 70/25/5 — Expected 4-6%

2. Moderate — 50/45/5 — Expected 6-8%

3. Growth — 25/70/5 — Expected 7-10%

4. Aggressive — 10/80/10 — Expected 9-13%

Model portfolios with Australian instruments

Conservative (~AUD 50K example)

  • 35% VAF (Vanguard Australian Government Bond): AUD 17,500
  • 25% VBND (Vanguard Global Bond): AUD 12,500
  • 20% VDCO (Vanguard Diversified Conservative): AUD 10,000
  • 15% High-interest savings (UBank, ING): AUD 7,500
  • 5% Cash: AUD 2,500

Moderate (~AUD 50K example)

  • 40% VDBA (Vanguard Diversified Balanced): AUD 20,000
  • 25% VAS (Vanguard Australian Shares): AUD 12,500
  • 25% VGS (Vanguard MSCI International): AUD 12,500
  • 5% Bonds VAF: AUD 2,500
  • 5% Cash: AUD 2,500

Growth (~AUD 50K example)

  • 50% VDHG (Vanguard Diversified High Growth): AUD 25,000
  • 25% VGS (international): AUD 12,500
  • 15% VAS (Australia): AUD 7,500
  • 5% VGE (emerging markets): AUD 2,500
  • 5% Cash: AUD 2,500

Aggressive (~AUD 50K example)

  • 60% VDHG + IVV (S&P 500): AUD 30,000
  • 15% VGE (emerging markets): AUD 7,500
  • 15% Individual stocks (ASX 200 + US tech): AUD 7,500
  • 5% Crypto: AUD 2,500
  • 5% Cash for opportunities: AUD 2,500

Account location matters

Super

Best for tax-effective long-term. Salary sacrifice up to cap (AUD 30K).

Outside Super (taxable)

ETFs in VAS, VGS, VDHG. Tax-efficient.

SMSF

Only for high net worth (typically AUD 250K+). Complexity and costs justify only at scale.

Common mistakes

  • Conservative in aggressive = panic sells
  • Aggressive in cash savings = frustration
  • No diversification = concentration risk
  • No rebalancing required annually

Resources

  • ASIC MoneySmart
