Index fund investing has transformed UK personal finance over the last decade. The combination of low-cost platforms, the ISA tax wrapper, and decades of evidence showing passive beats active makes this the default recommendation for most UK investors.

FTSE All-World vs S&P 500 vs FTSE 100

  • FTSE All-World (VWRL, FWRG): Most diversified — ~3,700 companies across 49 countries. The default recommendation for UK investors who want global diversification without home bias.
  • S&P 500 (CSP1, VUAG): 500 largest US companies. Higher historical returns than FTSE All-World but more concentration in US equities. ~65% of FTSE All-World is US anyway.
  • FTSE 100: UK's 100 largest companies. Historically underperformed global indices. Heavy in financials, energy, and mining. Avoid as your only holding.
💡 Always use an ISA wrapper first Capital gains above £3,000/year (2026/27 annual exempt amount) are taxed at 18-24%. Dividend income above £500 is taxed at 8.75-39.35%. Inside an ISA, both are completely tax-free. Open an ISA before opening a taxable general investment account.
